Massage & Stress – Nov 2016

Stress… I mention it often because it has so many adverse affects on our lives, both physically and mentally. Everyone handles stress differently and it also affects everyone differently. WebMD lists the following symptoms of stress:

Emotional symptoms of stress include:

  • Becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody
  • Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control or need to take control
  • Having difficulty relaxing and quieting your mind
  • Feeling bad about yourself (low self-esteem), lonely, worthless, and depressed
  • Avoiding others

Physical symptoms of stress include:

  • Low energy
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation, and nausea
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Frequent colds and infections
  • Loss of sexual desire and/or ability
  • Nervousness and shaking, ringing in the ear, cold or sweaty hands and feet
  • Dry mouth and difficulty swallowing
  • Clenched jaw and grinding teeth

Cognitive symptoms of stress include:

  • Constant worrying
  • Racing thoughts
  • Forgetfulness and disorganization
  • Inability to focus
  • Poor judgment
  • Being pessimistic or seeing only the negative side

Behavioural symptoms of stress include:

  • Changes in appetite — either not eating or eating too much
  • Procrastinating and avoiding responsibilities
  • Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes
  • Exhibiting more nervous behaviours, such as nail biting, fidgeting, and pacing

A regular massage routine can help reduce the effects of stress. The head and face massage is especially relaxing, it can even put people to sleep or into a trance-like state. A good head and face massage is so relaxing that it puts the body into an ideal state to activate its own natural healing mechanisms. It’s important to note that one massage feels great but it’s the regular routine that will show results, just like you won’t lose 10 pounds by going on a diet for one day. The neck and shoulders also carry a lot of stress so are deserving of a good massage as well. By adding massage to your routine you will find you will look and feel healthier and will improve your vitality and state of mind.
