Diabetes – Mar 2018

Massage is one of the oldest forms of health care practices. Massage therapy history dates back thousands of years to ancient cultures that believed in its medical benefits. Massage is about relaxing tense muscles, improving the range of motion of joints, stress relief and enhancing circulation. One of the keys to reaping the numerous benefits of massage is regular treatments.

Diabetes is a common disease in many older people. In Canada approximately 20% of adults over 65 years of age have diabetes. Massage can be beneficial as it increases circulation which tends to encourage cellular intake of glucose and improve insulin utilisation. Diabetic clients can check glucose levels an hour or two after receiving a massage to witness how their glucose levels have been altered. It is also very important with diabetes to have good circulation to the extremities. Relaxation, a good night’s sleep and stress relief are also very important to a person’s health when dealing with any disease and massage is an excellent way of achieving this.  Massage will also increase mobility and enhance tissue elasticity. Both of these will encourage having a more active lifestyle which will help reduce the chance of depression associated with this condition. I love working with seniors and going to local retirement residences every week and providing people in our community the opportunity to help manage their good health.
